Week 6 post 2

Wanted to discuss a couple of other cool web applications I use at work, but can’t really show how to use them. One is ADP which is a web application that allows us to view our payroll data. When I log in, I can see how much sick, vacation and personal time I have available, as well as how much of that time I have used. You can also use this application to request time off. You can use this application from anywhere as long as you have an internet connection of course.

The second web application I use is to activate our company Blackberry's. BES (Blackberry Enterprise Server) When I use this software, I can add a new Blackberry device and configure it to receive company emails. I can also lock a device if lost or stolen.

Week 6 post 1

A great web application i use is called Arul's Utilities. http://aruljohn.com He has several utilities that I use while at work. The one I use the most is his MAC address lookup tool. MAC means Media Access Control address. A MAC address is a unique identifier assigned to network interfaces for communications on the physical network segment. The manufacturer of each device, assigns a MAC address. Here is how to find your own MAC address. https://oeb.harvard.edu/support/find_ethernet.html. The reason I use this utility at work is to determine which devices are connected wirelessly to my network. We have a policy, that no staff can add their personal devices to our Wi-Fi. With over 100 staff, it tends to happen. I can block certain MAC addresses. I know if go to this site http://aruljohn.com/mac.pl and enter the following MAC address (D4BED9), it tells me that the manufacturer is a Dell device. All of our office devices are Dell. MAC addresses are 12 characters, but this lookup only needs the first 6.  If there is a non-Dell or unrecognizable device, it is blocked from our network.  This site also has some other great utilities.  Got take a look.

Hi Mike,
This is a very cool web application. It was a little freaky to go to the site and be fully recognized. But, I do like the fact that you can look up IP addresses - very useful. Thanks for sharing.

Week 5 post 2

Well, it looks like we are not going to get as much snow as originally forcasted for Boston.  Earlier in the week they were thinking we would get possibly 12+ inches.  We just got twenty two inches last weekend.  This is the third weekend snow storm.  Looks like only three to six inches of snow now.  My wife and daughter are with me at my Dads house on Cape Cod this weekend.  It's about 50 minutes from our house in Boston.  It is so relaxing down here.  The house is right on the water.  Very peaceful place to get homework done. 

Week 5 post 1

Even though Monday was a holiday, it so seemed like a long work week.  I think being in Florida last week for 4 days and jumping right back into work didn't help either.  LOL.  I accomplished lots of server updates.  I am responsible for 9 servers between three locations.  There were also some minor updates for individual computers that staff needed.  I am responsible for 90 plus computers between our three locations here in Massachusetts. 

OK, so its 11:38 PM and the assignment is due 42 minutes.  I am just about done.  This is my second blog post for the week.  My hands are sore.  Lots of cut, copy and paste.  I hate the < > keys at this time.  But I will say it was very interesting learning about making the web page with pictures and video.  The CSS page was a little difficult to follow.  It's done, but its not pretty.  While looking at other students web pages, i was very impressed.  It helped me learn allot of things.  Well.  Time for bed.  Onto week five.  Keep up all the good work folks.   Mike

Well, I tried to tackle the assignment this week prior to my departure to Florida.  It was a challenge to say the least following the YouTube videos with silent instructions.  There was some captions, but still had to pause and start many many times.  Hope to get the assignment complete this week on time, but it is looking very tight.  Fingers crossed.

Week 3 Post 2

The Internet has allowed me to improve communications. Mostly with my family in other states and in other countries. We are now able to use Skype, Facebook chat and Facebook video chat. We like the video chat options in order to see face to face with family. The video just seems more personal by being able to see eachother face to face. I would say I like it even more than just picking up the phone. We also use video conference at work. We have 12 locations in different states. It is a great cost saver. Our headquarters is based in New York. Using the video conference has saved us thousands of dollars in airfare. In the past, staff from all locations would need to travel to New York. Now its just a click of a switch and we are all in the same room. My daughter even uses video conference in one of her classes at school. One of there homework assignments is to video in from home to a vitural classroom. Its an exercise that engages parents and students to be involved. I did get volunteered to help assist with this project thank to my lovely 12 year old daughter. LOL

Week 3 Post 1

Well, the snow has arrived. Here in Boston, we got 21.8 inches of snow. My wife, my daughter and I were in the house all night last night. The wind was howling. At around 6 in the evening, the lights flickered and out went the power. We were very lucky that we only lost power for 1 hour. Everyone was in a panic. Only because they had no Wi-Fi of course. Thankfully i have a Verizon wireless card. I plugged it into my laptop, and was able to share the laptops internet connection for 3 laptops and 3 tablets. The girls were able to watch Netflix. So now that the snow has fallen, here comes the cleanup. Here is a picture looking out the windows during the storm.  Today is the cleanup day.  You can see a couple of more pictures of my daughter and my wife as well as a picture of the front of the house.  Looks like we live in the North Pole.  We are still waiting for the plows to come down the street so we can move the cars and maybe go to the store.  Not sure what the main streets are looking like, but soon hope to find out.

Post 3 of week 2 with video

My wife and I are going do Dunedin Florida on the 14 the of February.  We will be returning back to Boston on the 17th of February.  We are staying at a condominium my Dad purchased in March of 2012.  We have never seen the property and looking forward to seeing it.  My sister and her boyfriend will join us on this trip as well.  We have managed to have a quick getaway with out the kids.  We are so looking forward to it.  Above, you will find a video about Dunedin Florida. 

Post 2 of week 2

Today, just finishing up my homework.  My wife is working on a Saturday, which is very rare for her.  My lovely 12 year old daughter is doing her homework and I am so sure looking forward to cleaning up her room.  Plans for later today are to straighten out the basement.  I have so procrastinated in getting the done, but i think my wife has purchased a new cattle prod to get this project done or at least started this weekend.  Wish me luck.

Week 2 Post 1 with image.

All I can say it TGIF.  It has been a long week.  The weather has teased us a few times this week as well.  Two weeks ago, my employer gave out about 40 new Ipads for users in my office.  Well, guess who the person to support the devices are?   You guessed it, me.  The person who has never used an Apple product in their life and supports about 100 PCs in my office.  Well, we have 3 offices in Massachusetts, Boston, Springfield and Hyannis.  I was just waiting for the first issue.  Today.  "Mike, my Ipad wont even power on, can you fix it".   Mind you this while i has having lunch in the cafe.  I said yes, bring it to me with your charger.  I have to run, stay tuned for post 2.
